Pierce Brosnan has agreed to play the Justice Society’s Dr. Fate in DC’s Black Adam movie opposite Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The news means that casting is complete for the main characters in the long-awaited Shazam! spin-off. The film will mark the first comic-book adaptation of Brosnan’s career. He joins Johnson as Black Adam, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Aldis Hodge as Hawkman. The film will also feature Marwen Kenzari is a mystery role. Dr. Fate is one the oldest characters in the DC canon, making his bow in More Fun Comics #5 (1940). He was created by Gardener Fox and Howard Sherman.

New Line is producing the film with DC after the success of Shazam! in 2019. They are aiming for an April start in Atlanta, Georgia. Jaume Collet-Serrawill direct, reuiniting with Johnson after the much delayed Jungle Cruise. FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon is executive producer on the project, written Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (who penned the latest draft) with Adam Sztykiel writing the previous draft.

Brosnan’s character will be Kent Nelson, the original Dr. Fate. In DC mythos, Nelson was instructed in the ways of sorcery and given The Helmet of Fate. Brosnan is of course best known for being James Bond, before passing the role to Daniel Craig after four films. He also starred in the much-loved remake of The Thomas Crown Affair and has produced many films under his Irish Dream Time banner. He is also a well-regarded philanthropist and environmentalist. His next film will be Cinderella, due out in July.
