James Gunn’s sequel series begins its journey to HBO Max!

James Gunn’s big and small screen universe is racking up the announcements, with Gunn posting on Instagram over the weekend updating us on Peacemaker’s second season.
The director and co-head of DC’s screen adaptations (as well as the director of the upcoming Superman film) revealed a shot of the Peacemaker helmet – writing ‘Day 1, S2’ – indicating that filming on the highly anticipated sophomore season had begun!
John Cena also shared an image of the helmet – but this time in a woodland setting. Peacemaker (played by Cena) proved to be THE breakout character from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, his sequel to David Ayer’s divisive first film.
We loved Peacemaker Season 1 at The Comic Crush, even though we didn’t get to do our podcast on the show until well after its premiere, thanks to an elongated gap between its US and UK release dates
But Peacemaker isn’t the only character to spin out of The Suicide Squad – Gunn also announced a series headlined by Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller (head of Task Force X, the shady Government agency that runs the Suicide Squad). There’s no release date for Waller just yet – or for Peacemaker Season 2, but rumours are post Superman’s release in 2025.
Waller is said to feature members of team Peacemaker, including John Economos (played by Steve Agee) and Leota Waller-Adebayo, played by The Colour Purple’s Danielle Brooks.
Gunn has said of the Waller spin-off, "[We] have this incredibly marvelous story worked out that I think is really fantastic and HBO loves. So they're putting this all together."
Gunn and DC co-head Peter Sarafan are running all of DC’s screen output, starting in huge fashion, with Superman (recently retitled from Superman Legacy). That film’s shooting started recently, on 29th February – the fictional character’s birthday!
Gunn said of the title change: "When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025."
Peacemaker season 1 can be streamed on Max in the US, and Sky Go and NOW in the UK.
