The Tenet helmer is going Homeric!

After a lot of speculation and excitement over a growing cast of A-Listers joining the project, Christopher Nolan has announced his next film, via Universal Pictures’ socials.

The post, which arrived yesterday, simply read: Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, and Charlize Theron have already signed on to the movie. Nolan is one of the few film makers left who makes fully big-screen entertainment with an all-star cast, something which threatened to fade from screens.

Nolan’s insistence that his films are theatrical experiences first has caused some consternation at the corporate end of the film business, leading to his well-publicised spat with Warner Bros who announced day and date releases on their streaming service Max during the pandemic, including Nolan’s then newly-made Tenet. This led to him parting ways with the studio that had been his home through eight films and a significant portion of his career until then.

He followed Tenet with Oppenheimer and Oscar success for both his cast and himself, and one of the biggest financial successes of his career, on a par with his Batman films. Ow working with Universal for the second time, he has his eye on one of the oldest and most loved mythic epics of all time, the one from which all others stem: The Odyssey.

Nolan, like his hero Ridley Scott, has a particular flair for historical epics, and the announcement puts paid to speculation that his next project would be a horror film. Still, with two and a half years to go before the film’s release, there’s still time for Nolan to squeeze in a low-budget, shot-on-digital slasher flick!

The Odyssey will be released on Imax and cinemas everywhere, 17th July 2026. We’ll have more news as it breaks.
