Superstar writer Tom King, currently producing amazing work with Peter Gross on Animal Pound from Boom! Studios and Helen of Wyndhorn with Bilquis Evely, has taken to twitter to announce his next book with DC Comics, to be pencilled by artist Jeff Spokes: A Jenny Sparks mini-series!
DC also released some information on the new series: Kicking off the action in Jenny Sparks #1, what could four strangers have to do with the fate of the world? Find out as Captain Atom goes rogue, threatening to destroy the planet he once swore to protect. It may take the most unconventional hero of them all to stop him…Jenny Sparks, the one woman tasked with keeping all the heroes in line, no matter the cost. With a snap of her fingers, she’s entered the fray and won’t quit until the job is done!
DC has been leaning into Wildstorm lately, especially with it’s Batwoman-led, Planetary in all but name book, Outsiders, so it’s no surprise to see the queen of the Wildstorm universe herself gracing comics once more. And King has a gift for reinventing characters through traumatic experience, so can we expect a tense trip through Jenny’s past? Let’s see what King himself had to say…
“The incredible Jeff Spokes and I are launching a new mini series from @DCOfficial! An epic, thrilling, mind-blowing series in the tradition of Strange Adventures, Mister Miracle, and The Human Target.”
King elaborated: “The Spirit of the 20th Century comes to the 21st to try to save six men and women taken hostage by an out-of-control and infinitely powered Captain Atom. Through this lens, we’ll explore the grip of Jenny’s time on our own; how, despite all our desperate prayers, the sins of our past refuse to die away.”
King continued, prising his collaborator: “Featuring astonishing art by Jeff Spokes (seriously it’s so damn good), Jenny Sparks seeks to set the bar in superhero comics, to show how our heroes can illuminate and define our moment.”
DC have confirmed the series will be released on their Black Label imprint, and run for six, 40-page issues, with 28 story pages per issue. The first issue will drop 21st August 2024, will feature a main cover by Spokes, with variant covers by Guillem March, Homare, and Saowee (1:25).
