Five years since his last outing as both writer and illustrator in comics, the legendary Mike Mignola will create a full-length comic for his Hellboy Universe! This time, he's focusing not on Big Red himself, but on Koschei The Deathless and Sir Edward Grey, the Witchfinder. The story will be titled: Sir Edward Grey: Acheron. The one-shot story picks up the threads after the events of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know, which saw humanity (led by Hellboy and The B.P.R.D.) driven underground.

Mignola's last work as both writer and artist was Hellboy In Hell in 2016, although he has continued to write and draw covers for the Hellboy universe. For Acheron, he reunites with colourist Dave Stewart and letterer Clem Robbins, both essential players in the Hellboy comics. Ben Stenbeck, Mignola's artist of choice for his Baltimore series, will provide a variant cover for the one-shot tale, whilst main cover duties will be handled by Mignola and Stewart.

The creator had this to say about his return to scripting and drawing the book: "Even after Hellboy was finished with Hell, I knew I wasn’t. I’d relocated two of my favourite characters there - Edward Grey and Koshchei the Deathless. I figured the two of them were bound to run into each other (and they will), but first I had an unfinished bit of business for Ed to take care of on his own. It was a real pleasure to dive back into that world, and I look forward to getting back there again before too long."

Editor Katii O’Brien divulges more details: “We’ve followed Ed Grey from his first appearance in Hellboy: Wake the Devil, through his time as the queen’s occult investigator in the Witchfinder series, to Hellboy in Hell, and we last saw Ed Grey in B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know, guiding Hellboy into his final stand at the end of the world. But Ed’s story still isn’t over, and he is the only one who can confront what awaits in Hell.”

Sir Edward Grey: Acheron will be published by Dark Horse Comics on December 1, 2021.
